Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy promote mega floating wind project in Scotland

Norwegian offshore wind company Vårgrønn and its British partner Flotation Energy have filed a scoping report for a major floating wind project off the coast of Scotland. The Cenos floating wind project would have an installed capacity of 1.4 GW, generated by 70-100 wind turbines.

The scoping report was submitted in response to Crown Estate Scotland’s INTOG leasing round.

The Cenos project is not entirely dissimilar to Equinor, Petoro, TotalEnergies, Shell and ConocoPhillips’ Trollvind, which plans for 1 GW of floating wind energy capacity off the coast of Bergen, Norway. Both projects would generate power to electrify offshore oil and gas installations, and both projects would be connected to the mainland and send extra power there.

Cenos backers say the project will help cut an estimated two million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Crown Estate Scotland anticipates announcing the offer of Exclusivity Agreements for INTOG in the first quarter of 2023. Cenos plans for power generation to begin as early as 2028.

It is the second project of its kind to be promoted by Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy; the first was project Green Volt, another floating wind farm that would have an installed capacity of 500 MW.
