New wind power myth debunked by fact-checking website

Norwegian fact-checking website faktisk.no debunks a myth that claimed wind turbines in Germany had a greater warming effect on the climate than air traffic.

The background for the myth is the use of SF6 as a current interrupting medium in grid infrastructure connected to wind farms. The global warming potential of SF6 is enormous, so any leaks of the gas will have a warming effect, and research is ongoing to find a better alternative to the gas.

In its article, faktisk.no concludes that the interrupters on every single one of Germany’s 30000 wind turbines would have to be deliberately damaged every year for the previously mentioned claim to be true. In addition, the article points out that SF6 is not used exclusively for wind turbines, but in electrical transmission and distribution equipment in the whole power grid, regardless of the power generation method.
