ForWind joins NorthWind as associate research partner

The ForWind – Center for Wind Energy Research, based in Germany, joins NorthWind as an associate research partner. This collaboration promises to bring forth advancements in various sectors of wind energy research.

ForWind brings together 30 institutes and working groups from the universities of Oldenburg, Hannover, and Bremen. The Centre focuses its efforts on an array of fields including engineering, physics and meteorology, computer science, and economics. It is renowned for its substantial and unique wind energy research infrastructure. Among its facilities are a test centre for support structures, a large-scale wind tunnel, and a state-of-the-art test laboratory for power electronics.

The motivation behind ForWind’s participation as an associate research partner of NorthWind is multifaceted. It aims to address critical challenges in areas such as structural integrity, marine operations and logistics, electrical infrastructure, system integration, and sustainable wind development.

The German Centre will participate in NorthWind’s Scientific Advisory Committee’s activities, advise PhD students, and actively pursue opportunities for collaboration in joint projects as spin-offs from the two centres. Mutual short or long-term visits by scientific staff are also expected.

NorthWind director John Olav Tande welcomes this new partnership: “The research tasks ahead of us are many, and the challenge of upscaling wind power sufficiently to meet climate goals requires the concerted efforts of our best and brightest, regardless of international borders.”
