Digital twins explained on SINTEF podcast

SINTEF Research Manager and NorthWind leader of Work Package 4 , Kjetil André Johannessen (Digital Twin & Asset Management), gave an overview of what digital twins are and what they can be used for on SINTEF podcast Smart Forklart.

Johannessen and podcast host Aksel Faanes Persson discussed how digital twins use sensors and computer modelling to predict, for example, when a part needs to be replaced on a wind turbine. Another useful application they touched was how digital twins also make it possible to explore hypothetical scenarios, such as how a strong wind storm could impact a wind farm.

Kjetil André Johannessen also pointed out that ordinary people use digital twins every day:

– Weather models are essentially digital twins. If you look at how they work, and how they come to their conclusions about what the weather will be like tomorrow, it all comes down to mathematical models, statistics and machine learning, just like we use on other digital twins.
